When your home or business is in need of restoration, it can seem overwhelming. As you consider restoration needs, you’ll probably realize that there’s a lot to think about. What company should you choose? What company can you trust? What company is going to do the best job for your specific project?

As it turns out, there are three things you really need to consider before choosing a restoration company to get the job done right.

  1. Is it a local company?
    1. By calling on a local company to get your restoration project done, you know they’ll be available quickly if you need them. If you choose a company that’s not local, and you end up with an unexpected problem, it could take hours for them to reach you. Choosing a local company, on the other hand, ensures that they’ll be ready right away if chaos occurs.
  2. Does the company have good reviews?
    1. In today’s day and age, reviews are everything. When people are particularly happy—or particularly upset—about a service, they oftentimes go online to leave their feedback. That’s why it’s important to take a look at a restoration company’s reviews. If they have good ones, great! If not, it might be time to look for another company. And if they don’t have any reviews, that’s typically not a good sign either.
  3. Is the company available 24/7?
    1. If something goes wrong with your restoration project in the middle of the night, you want to be able to reach someone. If not, it could make a world of difference in both the timing and the cost of the project. That’s why it’s important to find a restoration company that’s always reachable.

When you consider Calloway Cleaning and Restoration for your restoration project, you’ll soon realize that we fit the bill on all accounts.

We’re a local company, serving Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio (both Cincinnati and Dayton). We have great reviews—a 4.9-star rating after 242 reviews. And, last but not least, our trained technicians are on call 24/7 for all of your restoration needs.

Believe it not, winter is knocking at the door. But before you get all snuggled up and cozy near the warm fire, it’s important to make sure that your home’s pipes are ready for what’s to come. If not, they can easily break or freeze, causing flooding all over your home. Keep reading to learn how to best prepare your pipes for the winter—and what to do if disaster strikes.

How can you prepare your pipes for the winter?
As winter rolls in, the temperatures keep dropping, which can lead to big problems if your pipes are unprepared. To prevent pricey damage from a broken, burst or frozen pipe, here are three simple steps to follow.

  1. Insulate your water pipes.
Many pipes throughout a home are prone to freezing as the temperature gets lower and lower. You can prevent this by adding a layer of insulation, simply by wrapping them with foam sleeves, heat tape or newspaper.
  2. Occasionally run the water.
By letting a trickle of water run through the faucets in your home, it’ll help prevent the water in the pipes from freezing.
  3. Have your furnace checked.
It’s very important to make sure your heating system is in good shape before the cold weather comes in. That’s because, if your furnace breaks in the middle of winter, your pipes are increasingly vulnerable to freezing temperatures.

What if your pipes still burst, break or freeze?
If you take every precaution and your pipes still burst, break or freeze this winter, it can easily lead to flooding throughout your home and can even damage the foundation structure.

With all of the rain and storms we’ve gotten lately, your house might be the unfortunate victim of storm damage. And sometimes, storm damage to the outside of your house can lead to damage on the inside of your house as well.

Read on to learn a few ways that storms can damage your home—and how the experts at Calloway can help.

How can storms damage your home?

When storms hit, they can affect houses in various ways. Here are just a few:

  • Roof damage: When storms hit hard, they can cause the shingles on your roof to break or fly away completely. This can lead to a leaky or inefficient roof very quickly.
  • Gutter damage: When storms affect your gutters, water can easily find its way into your home. This can lead to a whole host of other issues with water damage.
  • Siding damage: When Mother Nature really gets going, it can affect a home’s siding. Missing siding allows water to sneak into your home.
  • Fence damage: Big enough storms can easily take out a fence—either partially or the whole thing. Either way, a damaged fence can lead to unwanted animals coming into your yard, as well as your pets being able to get out of your yard.

Storm damage? Help is just a call-o-way!

There’s no denying it: Storms can happen anytime, anywhere—often without warning. And unfortunately, they can be brutal enough to cause severe damage to your house.

The next time that Mother Nature hits your house hard, don’t worry. Instead, call the experts at Calloway. Our reliable team of professionals is available any time—24 hours a day—to clean up any mess and help rebuild what was lost. We’ll mitigate any storm damage to your home quickly and easily—so you can get on with your day.

If you’re one of the many people who has experienced a failed sump pump, you know how frustrating this can be. But before you lose your cool, take a deep breath and simply keep reading. You’ll learn all about what’s going on and how you can get it fixed quickly and easily.

What is a sump pump?

A sump pump is a pump that’s used to remove accumulated water in a water-collecting sump basin, most often found in the basement of a house. Sump pumps eliminate moisture and prevent flooding.

Although not all houses have sump pumps, houses that are likely to flood usually have one. If you live in a city that’s prone to heavy rains or you live in a low area (like at the bottom of a hill), a sump pump is a particularly good piece of equipment to have in your house.

What causes a sump pump to fail?

There are four main reasons that a sump pump can fail.

  • Power failure: The most common reason that a sump pump fails is because of power failure. Some sump pumps have a battery backup, which is especially helpful when the main power is out for an extended period of time.
  • Switch problems: Another reason a sump pump can fail is due to switch problems. This happens when a sump pump moves out of its position inside the basin, which makes the float ineffective. The float ensures that the on/off switch operates correctly. Without the switch and the float arm mechanisms operating effectively, a sump pump won’t work.
  • Improper installation: The third reason that a sump pump fails is because of improper installation. If the manufacturer’s instructions aren’t followed to a T, severe water damage can happen. There are three things that most manufacturers require: (1) a check valve installed on the discharge line, (2) the drilling of a small air relief hole in the discharge line and (3) that the sump pump pit is not set in dirt or gravel. If these three rules are followed during installation, sump pumps usually work well.
  • Lack of maintenance: The final reason sump pumps can fail is due to lack of maintenance. Many manufacturers recommend that the pump is run at least every two to three months, and that this is always completed just before the rainy season hits. When testing your sump pump, it’s important to go outside and make sure that it’s releasing water. When the motor is running, listen for any unusual noises. It’s also important that the battery on the backup sump pump is replaced every two to three years. This maintenance is usually super-easy and helps you save money in the long run by either letting you avoid replacing your sump pump or allowing you to avoid an expensive project due to water damage.

If your sump pump does fail and the water level rises too high, many sump pumps have a simple, battery-powered water alarm that goes off to let you know.

Are you one of the many people in America who have mold growing in your house? Unfortunately, mold is a problem that people have been dealing with for years. Read on to learn why mold grows, the health problems it can cause as well as how to successfully get rid of it.

Why is mold growing in your house?

When mold shows up outside, it’s actually a good thing. It’s a normal part of nature, as it breaks down dead organic matter (including fallen leaves and dead trees). But when you see mold indoors, it’s another story.

Mold grows indoors when surfaces are wet. Mold won’t grow if moisture is not present. This moisture can be due to condensation, water leaks (which can often happen because of leaking pipes) or many other reasons. When something in your house is wet for 24 to 72 hours, mold can easily begin to grow.

Can mold cause health problems?

The short answer is: yes!

Mold can easily produce allergens, irritants and potentially toxic substances. If you touch or inhale any mold, it can trigger allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes.

Even if you aren’t allergic to mold, it can still easily irritate your eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs. Plus, the higher the level of mold in your home, the more likely you are to experience coughing, sore throat, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, brain fog, dizziness and lack of energy.

How can you get rid of mold in your house?

If you detect mold in your house, the key is to act quickly. Mold damages whatever it grows on—and the longer it grows, the more damage it can cause. It’s important to take care of mold as soon as possible so you can prevent damage to your home and belongings, save money and avoid potential health problems.

Indoor mold growth can most likely be controlled by cleaning up the mold and then getting rid of the moisture that allowed it to grow in the first place.

So, once you suspect mold in your house, where do you begin? A great first step is to call a professional mold remediation service, such as Calloway Cleaning and Restoration. Mold remediation is one of our specialties! We’ll handle your mold problem in three simple steps.

Flooded basement. Burst pipe. Failed sump pump. Overflowing toilet, bathtub, sink or drain. There are so many things that can happen to cause water damage in your home. And no matter how water damage happens, one thing’s for sure: It’s a stressful situation for any homeowner.

If water sits in your home too long, it can permanently damage your belongings or lead to mold buildup. That’s why reaction time is critical. To minimize the damage, water removal must happen very quickly—and it must be done by an expert. Read on to learn two simple steps for how to best handle water damage, just in case you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation.

  1. Turn off the main water supply. If you find that a pipe has burst, your toilet or sink has overflowed or your refrigerator, washing machine, hot water heater or dishwasher has leaked, it’s important to turn off the main water supply. This will ensure that any appliances that use water will no longer work until the water is turned back on, and that any repairs can be done.
